skywald horror-mood

Here are a few Skywald horror comics from the 1970s. Skywald was a competitor to Warren and their B&W horror mags, but never really made it, due, I can only assume, to considerably lower circulation. Skywald's horror titles were "Nightmare," "Psycho," and "Scream." They generally featured some pretty excellent artwork and good writing. They also published some comics-sized books, such as "The Heap," seen below, which I can only guess was meant to be their angsty green answer to Swamp Thing/Man-Thing. Skywald also published crime, western, jungle and romance comics. Headpress has published a very handsome book about them, and also some Skywald reprints. And here's a personal memoir from the Bad Movie Report about Hell-Rider, one of Skywald's crime mags.
If you ever see any Skywald comics, pick 'em up, they're generally pretty difficult to find...

An ad from the "Heap" comic. I want these, bad...

Check back later for two-fisted reviews of Hammer's "Curse of the Werewolf" and "Plague of the Zombies," and come back tomorrow for some Warren horror mags...
